OpenSeal

Privacy Policy

Effective

OpenSeal (“Seal”, “the app”) is a digital goshuinchō (御朱印帳): you photograph the goshuin you receive at shrines and temples and pin each one to its place on a map. The app is made by Jovan Frandika (“I”, “the developer”).

In short: OpenSeal does not collect any data. Everything you create stays on your device, and I never receive any of it.

01Summary

  • No account or sign-in.
  • No backend or server operated by the developer.
  • No analytics, no advertising, no tracking, and no third-party SDKs.
  • The developer receives no user data.
  • Everything you create is stored only on your device.
  • On the App Store, the app’s privacy label is “Data Not Collected”.

02Data stored on your device

The things you create in the app — your name, an optional profile picture, your goshuin photos, notes, dates and places — are stored only on your device, in the app’s private storage. They are not sent to the developer or to anyone else.

03Photos and camera

You add photos either with the system photo picker or by taking them with the camera. With the photo picker, the app only receives the photos you choose; it cannot see the rest of your photo library.

If a photo contains location metadata, the app reads it on your device only, to suggest the right shrine or temple (“Honour mode”). You can turn this off with the “Location check” switch in the app’s Settings.

04Location

While you are using the app, your location is used to show nearby shrines and temples and to measure distances to them. The app does not store your location and does not send it to the developer. You can change the app’s location access at any time in iOS Settings.

05Maps and place search (Apple)

Map display and place search use Apple’s MapKit. This means map and search requests — including the area being searched — are handled by Apple, under Apple’s Privacy Policy. The developer does not receive these requests.

06On-device processing

Page detection and a small image classifier (which checks whether a photo looks like a goshuin) run entirely on your device. Your photos are never uploaded and are never used for training.

The classifier was trained beforehand on openly licensed images from Wikimedia Commons. Their credits are listed in the app under Settings → About → Credits.

07Backups and restore

You can export a backup of your data as a .zip file (Settings → Backup → “Back up to zip”). The file is passed to the iOS share sheet, so you choose where it goes — for example Files or iCloud Drive. The developer has no access to it.

Restoring (Settings → Backup → “Restore from zip”, or “Restore from backup” when you first open the app) imports a .zip file that you pick.

08Deleting your data

Deleting the app, or choosing Settings → Reset → “Reset Seal” and confirming “Delete everything”, erases all of your data from the device. Backup files you have exported yourself are kept wherever you saved them until you delete them.

09Crash reports

Only if you have turned on Apple’s “Share with App Developers” setting, Apple may share anonymous crash and diagnostic data with the developer. This is controlled by Apple and by your device settings, not by the app.

10Children

OpenSeal does not collect personal information from anyone, including children.
